What is better? Premium fuel or regular fuel mixed with additives?

Dear Oil Doctor!

We were wondering if the same effect could be achieved with regular 85 gasoline + e.g. STP additive as with, say, premium (so as not to touch on the octane number issue now)? Just because it can probably be produced cheaper, and the effect is the same. Thanks in advance for your answer!

What is the additive for?
I'm wondering about this. What do you expect from it and why do you feel it's necessary?
It's best to use the fuel specified in the manual.
