The Volvo XC40 and XC60 may look similar at first glance, but long-term ownership experience can feel very different between the two.

Both offer the classic Volvo comfort and safety feel, yet repair costs, electronics, and daily usability start to separate them much more after a few years on the road.

Pros and Cons

Volvo XC40
Pros:

More affordable starting price.
Slightly better fuel efficiency.
Compact size suitable for urban driving.
Cons:
Less cargo space compared to the XC60.
Lower horsepower.

Volvo XC60
Pros:

More powerful engine.
Greater cargo capacity.
Availability of higher-end luxury features.
Cons:
Higher starting price.
Slightly lower fuel efficiency.

The XC40 probably makes more sense for city driving and lower running costs, while the XC60 feels more premium, more comfortable, and better suited for long-distance driving.
The real question is whether the extra comfort and luxury of the XC60 are worth the noticeably higher ownership and repair costs once the warranty period is over.

In my opinion the XC40 is more of a city-focused SUV, easier to park, more agile and slightly more efficient. The 194 hp engine is perfectly fine for daily driving and it handles highway use without any issues. For commuting or a small family it’s a smart and more affordable choice.
The XC60 feels more substantial, with a stronger engine and more cargo space. It’s more stable at higher speeds and more comfortable on long trips. If you travel a lot or want extra power and space, the XC60 makes more sense.
Honestly, both are good cars, it really depends on how you plan to use it.

Several Volvo models have already had software updates and recalls related to electronic issues.

On the XC40 for example, power tailgate problems and unexpected battery drain seem to come up fairly often among some owners.

The XC60 is definitely the more comfortable long-distance SUV, but once Volvo-priced parts and repair bills start appearing, many people realize ownership costs are much closer to a German premium brand than a typical Japanese SUV.

That said, both cars still have a very calm and comfortable character that many modern SUVs seem to be losing.

Curious if other owners here have experienced electronic or battery-related issues after a few years of ownership?
