The back camera in the Hilux vibrates

Hello Dr!

I would like to respectfully inquire about your opinion on what might be causing an issue with the reversing camera of my 2022 Toyota Hilux. When shifting into reverse, the camera provides a perfect image, but when pressing the brake pedal, the image vibrates once.

Would it be worth installing a noise filter?

Thank you!
Tom

Hi Tom,

The Hilux does not have an overly complex electrical system, so I assume the issue is caused by a voltage drop when the brake lights illuminate. Factory-supplied cables for non-premium camera kits are often very thin, which can result in significant voltage drops over long distances.

It would be worth testing with another RCA and signal cable. In many cases, the camera's negative is connected to a cable, which is not necessarily a bad solution, but mistakes can happen—especially if the factory wiring is not actually grounded. When measuring in the factory harness, the brake light might appear grounded through the bulb, but when activated, it carries a positive voltage. In such a case, the camera wouldn’t receive power—not just causing a flicker but actually blacking out while braking.

I believe using a thicker-gauge wire would solve the issue, or alternatively, using a relay would ensure proper isolation and eliminate the problem.

Best,
Car Doctor
