The Lexus LX has always been known for combining luxury with genuine off-road capability, but the new LX700h Overtrail takes things a step further. With a powerful hybrid drivetrain, front and rear locking differentials, upgraded suspension and serious trail-focused hardware, it's easily the most capable off-road Lexus ever offered. But does it have what it takes to compete with the best luxury off-road SUVs on the market? Let's take a closer look.

Overview & Key Takeaways

  • Hybrid Powertrain: Combines a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor, delivering 457 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.
  • Off-Road Enhancements: Features front and rear locking differentials, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and skid plates.
  • Interior Comfort: Offers a luxurious cabin with advanced technology and premium materials.
  • Pricing: Starts at $115,350 for the Overtrail trim.

Design & Innovations

  • Exterior: Matte Gray grille, black fender flares, and 18-inch wheels enhance its rugged appearance.
  • Interior: Equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 10-speaker premium sound system.

Performance & Range

  • Powertrain: The hybrid system not only boosts power but also improves fuel efficiency to an EPA-estimated 20 MPG combined.
  • Towing Capacity: Maintains a robust 8,000-pound towing capacity.

Battery & Charging

  • Battery: Utilizes a nickel-metal hydride battery located under the rear floor.
  • Charging: As a traditional hybrid, it doesn't require external charging; the battery recharges through regenerative braking and engine power.

Safety & Driver Assistance

  • Safety Features: Includes Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning, Pre-collision system, and more.
  • Driver Assistance: Equipped with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.

Sustainability & Environmental Impact

Owners and reviewers praise the LX700h Overtrail for combining exceptional refinement with genuine off-road capability. The hybrid system delivers effortless torque both on-road and on technical trails, while the locking differentials and upgraded suspension inspire confidence in challenging terrain.

The biggest criticism remains its price, along with fuel economy that, while improved over previous models, still trails smaller hybrid SUVs. Some reviewers also wish Lexus offered an even more modern infotainment interface considering the vehicle's premium positioning.

Pricing & Availability

  • Starting Price: $115,350 for the Overtrail trim.
  • Availability: Expected to be available in dealerships nationwide by late 2024.

If you're looking for a luxury SUV that can comfortably cruise on the highway during the week and confidently tackle difficult trails on the weekend, the LX700h Overtrail deserves serious consideration. While its premium price places it among the most expensive off-road SUVs available, few competitors offer the same combination of legendary Lexus reliability, hybrid performance, genuine four-wheel-drive hardware and everyday comfort.

I've just crossed 50,000 miles with my LX700h Overtrail, and it's honestly exceeded my expectations. The hybrid system has been completely transparent you never really think about it, it just works. Off-road, the instant torque makes crawling over rocks much smoother than I expected, and the front and rear lockers have already saved me a couple of times on muddy trails.

The only complaints so far are a few wireless Apple CarPlay disconnects and an occasional rattle from the rear cargo area after driving rough forest roads. Nothing major, but worth mentioning. Fuel economy is definitely better than the old V8, although you're still driving a very large SUV, so don't expect miracles.

Maintenance has been routine, with zero hybrid or drivetrain issues so far. If Lexus can keep this reliability going beyond 100k miles, I think the Overtrail could end up being one of the best long-term luxury off-road SUVs they've ever built.

Anyone here already over 75k or 100k miles? I'd be curious to hear if any common issues start showing up later.
