Hi Tired Dr,

I have purchased new Continental WinterContact TS860 tires for my car. Is it true that during the first 50-100 mile, I should drive at a lower speed to allow the tires to break in? I am aware of the mold release agent, and I understand that until it wears off, I cannot expect maximum grip. However, will it harm the new tires if I drive at highway speeds of around 60-70 mph from the very beginning?

Thank you for your response!

Dear Steve,

Yes, during the final phase of production, a special layer is applied to the surface of the tire, which needs to wear off the tread to achieve maximum grip. This is something worth keeping in mind during the first few hundred miles. Driving at highway speeds immediately after installation—even for extended periods—won't harm the tires. However, the driver should account for longer braking distances and less stable handling to avoid any accidents. That said, the tires themselves will not suffer any damage.

Best regards,
Car Dr
