Over the past few days the internet has been full of claims that EV charging in Canada is becoming free starting now sounds great right? The reality is a bit more nuanced, but still pretty interesting the key point is that around Earth Week several locations have launched temporary free charging campaigns, but this is not nationwide and not permanent Toronto is leading the way with 500+ charging points offering free charging between April 20–24, including the city-operated Green P network, which makes this more than just a small promo and closer to a large-scale city initiative in other parts of Canada there are similar efforts, but typically in smaller cities, for shorter periods, or limited to specific charging networks important to clarify that this does NOT mean EV charging has become free across Canada, these are mainly campaigns, promotions and awareness-driven initiatives

Do you think this is just smart marketing, or are we actually heading in this direction where free EV charging could become more common in the near future?

Honestly this is a really cool initiative. Free charging days are exactly the kind of thing that can get more people to actually try EVs instead of just thinking about them. Once you experience how simple and convenient it is, it just clicks.
Stuff like this also helps remove that mental barrier people have about charging costs and infrastructure. Even if it’s just for a day, it shows how accessible EV ownership can be.
Would be great to see this more often, not just as a one-off event. Even occasional free charging weekends could make a big difference.

Also curious how crowded the stations are going to be 😄

I think this is mainly a really smart mix of marketing and education, but there’s definitely some long-term potential behind it.
These “free charging” campaigns are great for getting people to actually try EVs without any pressure. Once someone experiences how simple and convenient it is, it lowers a huge psychological barrier. So in the short term, it’s clearly about awareness and user acquisition.
That said, completely free charging in the long run doesn’t really seem realistic The infrastructure is expensive to build and maintain, and someone always has to cover those costs.
What feels more likely is that we’ll see more temporary free campaigns like this, some locations offering free or discounted charging to attract customers, and maybe bundled models where charging is included with parking or subscriptions.
So not “free everywhere”, but more like strategically integrated into different business models.
What does seem very likely though is that we’ll see more of these initiatives as the main goal right now is still to accelerate EV adoption.
And yeah… stations are probably going to be packed 😄
