Does the hybrid kill the gasoline engine?

Dear Dr,

I have been thinking a lot about plug-in hybrids. I simply cannot see any positive aspect in a situation where I am driving a car parked outside in freezing temperatures, and the completely frozen gasoline engine suddenly kicks in at 3,000-4,000 RPM without any prior warming up. I believe this has not been properly thought through! In my opinion, this does everything to a gasoline engine—except anything good.

I would appreciate your esteemed opinion on this matter.

Thank you.

Dear Writer,

If we analyze the start of an internal combustion engine in such an extreme situation, it is indeed not beneficial for the engine. However, I would like to point out that no type of operation is entirely good for an engine—the question is only the extent of wear and tear. Yes, if the car is parked in freezing temperatures and the gasoline engine is suddenly started at high power after running purely on electric mode, it does put greater strain on the engine, leading to faster wear.

On the other hand, manufacturers are aware of this issue. That’s why they take it into account when designing the engine, lubrication system (including the choice of lubricants), and thermal management. It is also possible that the coolant used for the electric motor can transfer some heat to the internal combustion engine. Furthermore, it might not even be possible for a cold engine to suddenly rev up to 4,000 RPM when engaging with the electric motor. Instead, the electric motor may operate at higher power, while the internal combustion engine gradually engages at a lower output.

Unfortunately, we have to accept that, in the name of environmental protection, our cars sometimes make sacrifices that do not necessarily support longevity. In fact, in some cases, these sacrifices may even lead to higher costs for us—such as increased wear and tear.

Best regards.
