I think another factor that's easy to overlook is how people actually use their cars.

On paper, a plug-in hybrid often looks like the obvious winner. But its biggest advantage only exists if it's plugged in consistently. For someone with home charging and a daily commute within the EV range, a PHEV can be an excellent choice.

However, if most of your driving consists of long motorway trips or you rarely have the opportunity to charge, a conventional hybrid can actually make more sense. It's simpler to own, usually costs less to buy, and delivers consistently good efficiency without asking the driver to change their routine.

I also wouldn't base the decision solely on official fuel economy figures. Looking at your annual mileage, access to charging, electricity prices, and how long you plan to keep the vehicle will usually tell you far more about which option will cost less over time.

In the end, I don't think it's really a question of which technology is better. It's about which technology fits your lifestyle better and that's a very different answer for every driver.
