Hi Car Dealer Doctor,

After much consideration, I have decided to buy a hybrid car for my annual 25,000-mile driving. Due to its size and price, I have set my sights on the Ford Explorer Hybrid. Of course, it depends on the condition, but I am looking at vehicles with 60,000-70,000 miles on them.

My question is: Should I go for an Explorer, or would it be better to choose a Toyota Camry? The Camry would require a bit more investment or come with higher mileage.

Alternatively, there are similarly priced options like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or even some older Lexus models with higher mileage.

I appreciate your advice in advance!

Thx, George

Both the Ford Explorer Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid have their strengths, but it depends on your priorities. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

Ford Explorer Hybrid (60,000-70,000 miles)

✅ Pros:
  • Spacious SUV with more cargo room and higher seating position.
  • Capable of towing (~5,000 lbs).
  • Available AWD, better for winter or rough terrain.
  • Decent fuel economy for an SUV (~24-27 MPG combined).
❌ Cons:
  • Not as reliable as Toyota hybrids—potential issues with the transmission and battery over time.
  • Higher maintenance costs, especially as mileage increases.
  • Lower resale value compared to a Toyota.

Toyota Camry Hybrid

✅ Pros:
  • Much better fuel economy (~44-50 MPG combined).
  • Lower maintenance costs—Toyota hybrids are known for long-term reliability.
  • Smoother and more comfortable ride for highway driving.
  • More affordable insurance and repairs.
❌ Cons:
  • Smaller than an SUV—less cargo space.
  • Lower towing capacity (not ideal if you need it).
  • Front-wheel drive only (less traction in bad weather).

Alternative Options:

  1. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid – A great middle ground, better MPG (~40 MPG) than the Explorer, but still an SUV.
  2. Lexus RX 450h – More luxurious, reliable, but might have higher mileage in your price range.

Final Recommendation:

If you need an SUV with towing capacity and more space, the Explorer Hybrid is fine, but expect higher running costs.
If you prioritize fuel savings, lower costs, and long-term reliability, the Camry Hybrid is the smarter choice.
If you want an SUV but with Toyota’s reliability, the RAV4 Hybrid is the best option.
Would AWD be important for you? And do you need towing capability? 🚗
