The 2026 Toyota Aygo X is no longer just a city car it has become one of the most interesting small crossovers Toyota has ever built.

Hybrid Powertrain: Enhanced Efficiency and Performance

The Aygo X now features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid system, similar to that used in the Yaris. This setup delivers a combined output of approximately 114 horsepower, enabling the Aygo X to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in under 10 seconds a notable improvement over the previous 14.9-second time. Fuel efficiency is also enhanced, with consumption rated at approximately 3.8 liters per 100 km (about 74 mpg), and CO₂ emissions reduced to just 86 g/km, making it one of the most efficient non-plug-in vehicles in its class.

It's important to note that the manual transmission option has been discontinued; the hybrid model comes exclusively with Toyota's e-CVT automatic transmission.

GR Sport Trim: Sporty Aesthetics and Enhanced Handling

The introduction of the GR Sport trim adds a dynamic flair to the Aygo X lineup. While it doesn't increase engine power, this variant includes sport-tuned suspension, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, and distinctive GR-branded interior and exterior elements. These enhancements aim to provide a more engaging driving experience and a sportier appearance. Toyota Media Site

Design and Practicality: Urban-Friendly Dimensions

Built on Toyota's GA-B platform, the Aygo X maintains its compact dimensions, making it ideal for city driving. The hybrid system's battery is cleverly packaged beneath the rear seats, preserving interior space and maintaining a low center of gravity for improved handling. The vehicle's turning radius remains tight at 4.7 meters, facilitating easy maneuverability in urban environments.

Interior and Features: Modern and Connected

Inside, the Aygo X offers a modern cabin with updated materials and technology. Depending on the trim level, features may include a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a premium JBL audio system, and advanced driver-assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.

With full hybrid technology, noticeably better performance and the first-ever GR Sport variant, the 2026 Aygo X is more than just a facelift it could become the most desirable Aygo Toyota has ever built.

One thing I'd be paying attention to isn't the hybrid system itself Toyota has a great track record there but the cost of ownership.

With larger wheels on the GR Sport, more electronics and additional hybrid components, it'll be interesting to see whether the Aygo X can keep the low running costs that made previous Aygos so popular. Sometimes it's the everyday ownership experience that determines whether a small city car is truly a success.

That's a really good point.

I'd also be curious to see how the e-CVT feels with the extra power.

Toyota hybrids are incredibly reliable, but some drivers still don't enjoy the way the engine revs hard under acceleration. The additional horsepower should help, but the driving feel will probably matter more than the 0–62 time for most buyers.

If Toyota has made it feel quieter and more natural around town, I think that'll be a bigger improvement than the performance figures themselves.
