The BMW i8, introduced as a hybrid-electric supercar, remains one of the most iconic and innovative vehicles in its category. Initially launched in 2014 and discontinued in 2020, the i8 is renowned for its futuristic design, advanced technology, and performance that blends both gasoline and electric power.
Performance and Powertrain

The BMW i8 features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. The engine, located at the rear, produces 228 horsepower, while the front-mounted electric motor adds another 141 horsepower. Together, they deliver a total of 369 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. This setup allows the i8 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph.
Electric Range and Efficiency

The i8 offers an all-electric driving range of up to 18 miles on a full charge, thanks to its 11.6 kWh battery. While this range is modest compared to newer plug-in hybrids, it was quite advanced for its time, providing enough range for short city commutes without engaging the gasoline engine. When both power sources are combined, the i8 achieves an estimated fuel efficiency of 69 MPGe, making it one of the more efficient vehicles in its class.
Design and Features

One of the standout aspects of the BMW i8 is its design. The car features scissor doors, a low and wide stance, and an aerodynamic body that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie. The interior is equally futuristic, with a driver-focused cockpit, digital displays, and sustainable materials like recycled plastics and carbon fiber. The i8's design isn't just about looks—it's also about performance, with the car's lightweight construction contributing to its agility and efficiency.
Price

When new, the BMW i8 was priced around $147,500 for the coupe and slightly higher for the roadster variant. Despite its premium price, the i8 offered a combination of performance, efficiency, and exclusivity that justified its cost for many buyers. Today, used BMW i8 models can be found for significantly less, though prices vary depending on condition, mileage, and model year.

Market Position and Legacy

The BMW i8 was a groundbreaking vehicle when it was launched, showcasing BMW's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the sports car segment. Although it didn't have many direct competitors, it helped pave the way for other hybrid and electric sports cars. The i8's legacy lives on as a symbol of BMW's forward-thinking approach to performance and environmental responsibility.

The i8 may no longer be in production, but it remains a sought-after vehicle on the used car market, appreciated for its unique combination of style, technology, and eco-friendly performance.
