My Experience with the 2026 Kia Sportage - Great Car, But One Common Issue (and a Fix)

I’ve been driving the 2026 Kia Sportage for a little while now, and overall it’s been a really good SUV for everyday use. It’s comfortable, easy to live with, and the interior feels well thought out. The infotainment system works well, the seats are supportive, and in daily driving it feels smooth and pleasant especially if you’re coming from other compact SUVs in this class.

That said, there is one thing I’ve noticed that seems to come up with this generation:
the transmission can be a bit picky at times. Not every Sportage does it, but some owners (including myself) have noticed occasional odd shift behavior slightly delayed engagement, or the transmission feeling hesitant when changing gears.

Here’s the important part:
It’s not necessarily a mechanical failure, and in most cases there is a solution.
A lot of the time, the dealer can address this with a software update or a transmission fluid refresh/reprogramming that helps the shifting feel much more confident and smooth. When I brought mine in and had them check it, they updated the TCM (transmission control module) software and it made a noticeable difference.

So my advice is:
  • If you notice anything like delayed shifts or hesitation, don’t ignore it get it logged with the dealer so it’s officially documented.
  • Ask them specifically about software updates and transmission calibration a lot of times that’s enough to straighten things out.
  • It’s not a universal issue, but it does seem to be a recurring topic among owners.
Overall I still think the 2026 Sportage is a solid choice it’s comfortable, well equipped, and practical just be aware of the transmission quirks and that most of the time there is a fix for it through the dealer.
